This article explores the development of gender medicine in Taiwan. While gender medicine internationally has its roots in the medical community, in Taiwan, it was initiated by gender researchers from the social sciences, public health, and nursing. Later, the central government promoted the integrating of gender analysis into medical research and the incorporating gender perspectives into medical education. On September 27, 2022, after more than two decades of effort, doctors from the National Defense Medical Center and the Tri-Service General Hospital established The Taiwanese Association for Gender Medicine (TGMS) to advance gender medicine in Taiwan. TGMS has been building a body of knowledge by organizing academic lectures, both domestically and internationally, and publishing articles in its quarterly newsletter. To date, the association has held three national events covering various topics, including the development of gender medicine internationally and in Taiwan, ethics in gender medicine, research guidelines, medical education, hypertension, lupus, stroke, and geriatric medicine. These events have ignited interest and understanding of gender medicine within Taiwan's medical community. In its 2023 annual meeting, TGMS invited distinguished speakers, including Dr. Masahiro Akishita from the Japan Association for Gender-Specific Medicine and Professor Londa Schiebinger from Stanford University. The association’s newsletter has published five issues, presenting 15 insightful articles on gender medicine. TGSM aims to foster progress and innovation in gender medicine in Taiwan, ultimately enhancing overall healthcare quality and patient welfare.
