Regions with the highest incidence of amebiasis include most developing countries in the tropics, particularly Mexico, India, the nations of Central and South America, tropical Asia, and Africa. In Taiwan, amebiasis is relatively rare due to adequate sanitation. We report a 12-year-old girl suffering from abdominal pain over the right lower quadrant. An appendectomy was performed under the impression of acute appendicitis. After the appendectomy, frequent diarrhea developed and microscopic analysis of a fresh stool showed trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica. In this report, we describe the course of amebic colitis mimicking acute appendicitis.
