現今殺草劑在農藥界之地位越來越重要，期銷售額已經超過殺蟲劑及殺菌劑而佔農樂中之第一位。根據日本科學評論家杉本良雄(Life Science 通訊社)最近在日本農系學會誌(Jour. Pesticide Science , 5(4) ， 633 (1 980)) 之統計報告，1979年全世界之農藥銷售額為97億美金，其中殺草劑為39.3 億美金，佔全部農藥銷售額之40.5 %殺蟲劑為34.5 億美金佔35.6 %，殺菌劑為18 億美金佔18.5 %，植物生長調節劑及其他農藥為5.2 億美金佔5 .4%。由此看之，殺草劑現今已經在整個農藥中佔最重要之地位是不可置疑之事實。
